Oakland Adult Education Struggle! (VIDEO)

Some K-12 teachers have been supporting as educators in solidarity with adult students who are fighting budget cuts that would eradicate Adult Education programs in the Oakland Unified School District. Watch as a committee of students deliver their demands to OUSD:

The Students from the Family Literacy and GED Program read a letter to the Superintendent and the School Board regarding the recent decision to close the adult education program in the OUSD.

Dear Members of the School Board, April 22nd, 2013 We, the students of Family Literacy Class, disagree with the decision to cut Family Literacy and GED classes which are of great value for our communities. For immigrant and low-income communities education is an important tool in getting ahead as parents. We are motivated every day to learn, and now we can help our children do homework for school properly. In addition, we are preparing ourselves for better jobs. If you take away this opportunity to learn, then we cannot progress. For immigrant communities, English and GED are very important tools for overcoming adversity in this country.

If you cut this opportunity to learn we will continue to be in the darkness, when in fact we are people who are able to learn and excel in this country of opportunities.

We have many questions and doubts and we want to share with you the impacts of cutting these classes. Many of us cannot make it to the school board meetings in the evening because of family and work responsibilities. For this reason we are requesting a special meeting in which you (school board members and district representatives) are present along with our Family Literacy and GED teachers and us, the students. We await a response by April 26th to schedule a meeting for the following week (April 29th-May 3rd). We look forward to a favorable response from you as soon as possible.
